As everyone knows, no one has performed as many miracles as Jesus. But why is that?
First and foremost, his miracles attest that he is the Messiah, as the prophets had foretold these extraordinary signs long ago (see verse 11:5). Through his miracles, Jesus revealed the full extent of his power — a power so great that no disease can resist him.
Furthermore, by his miracles, Jesus demonstrates the goodness and generosity of God who sent him ; he doesn’t do miracles to impress the crowds, but to heal, restore and save. That’s the whole reason for his mission in the world, as the rest of the Injil makes clear. His miracles are simply a foretaste of this !
But Jesus didn’t just perform great miracles ; his purpose was to transmit God’s message to mankind. That is why, soon after his baptism and his first teachings, he begins choosing his disciples, companions whom he will carefully train to continue his mission after him. Then he preaches again to the crowds : the next three chapters will introduce us to his profound and powerful message.
